That leather belt scares me too. I remember my dad saying to my brother once that he would take his belt off if my brother spoke back to him again. But my dad never did take it off EVER. He was just saying that so my brother would behave. It was my dad's way of trying to scare us into behaving. My parents never hit us ever. I think kids should not be punished by being hit. It is cruel.
